Fuel Strategy in Action: Behind the Scenes at the Woodhill 2-Man Dirtbike Race

Going into the Wood hill 2-Man Dirtbike Enduro, we knew this one was going to be a little different. With Mitch’s bike out of action and still down in Christchurch, it was up to Brad to take on the course solo—making our pit stop strategy all the more crucial.

Fast Pit, Fuelled Rider: The Two-Part Strategy

Our goal was simple: Keep Brad and the dirtbike fuelled, fast.

There were two key elements we focused on for the pit stop:

  • Refuel the bike quickly

  • Refuel Brad efficiently for sustained energy and hydration

Hour One: Carb-Loading with Juice Boxes

In the first hour of racing, we turned to an unexpected but effective option—juice boxes.

These are loaded with easily digestible carbohydrates, perfect for maintaining endurance and quick to consume. The natural sugars helped keep Brad’s energy levels consistent while the compact packaging made them ideal for a fast grab-and-go solution.

Hour Two: Hydration Upgrade with Electrolytes

As the race wore on and the intensity climbed, we swapped out plain water for electrolyte-infused hydration. This helped:

  • Replenish lost sodium

  • Maintain fluid balance

  • Prevent cramping

  • Support sustained performance through the final stretch

Strategic hydration plays just as vital a role as food in endurance racing, and this small change kept Brad steady as the track wore him down.

Final Thoughts

While this wasn’t our typical two-man tag-team, the solo setup gave us the chance to trial a focused race-day fuelling strategy. Brad rode strong on his dirtbike, the fuelling plan went off without a hitch, and it was another reminder that nutrition and hydration are just as important as the ride itself.
